How Much Power Do Solar Panels Produce During Winter?

Read Time:1 Minute, 34 Second

Solar panels during the winter months still do indeed work, but will certainly generate less electricity than they would in spring, summer, or even autumn. However, in the UK, it is not cold weather that causes concern, as they actually work better at a cooler temperature. Less daylight, a weaker sun angle, and more clouds are the issues. Why does winter output drop

It is generally lower during the winter season mainly because;

There are fewer daylight hours

The sun is lower, so less of the sunlight reaches you and at a different angle

Direct sun is weakened by overcast days

Even worse, mirroring nearby trees and buildings may cause shading

Snow can also have an impact on output if it lands on panels, although this is less of a problem in much of the UK.

What you can realistically expect

Generally speaking, most homes will see a short drop in winter production relative to summer. You could still produce some useful daylight electricity, but not enough to hit everything, particularly during the evenings when lighting and heating-related demand peaks.

A battery allows you to store some of your excess daytime generation for use in the evening, but there may not be as much surplus to store over winter.

Get the most out of your winter sun!

Extract more value from winter generation:

Use appliances that use a lot of energy (e.g., washing machine, dishwasher) during the day

Invest in timers, so that you are using solar energy only during the day

Prune trees, if desired

Ensure your inverter is functional and reporting the correct information.

Solar panels in winter won’t cease working, but they will fall short of functioning at optimal output, rather. Some installers can anticipate your roof’s seasonal output, which will allow you to know what you are getting before the purchase.
