Breaking into journalism can be difficult, especially for people who don’t have financial support. Internships, which are sometimes unpaid or based in expensive cities like London, can make it harder for those from working-class backgrounds to get started. If you can’t afford to move to a major city or work for little pay while gaining experience, the path into the industry becomes steeper.
Education can also play a role
Many journalists come from similar university backgrounds, often studying at well-known institutions. While there’s nothing wrong with that, it can lead to newsrooms that are less diverse. When journalists share similar social or economic backgrounds, it may affect which stories are prioritised and how they are reported. There have been efforts to address the issue. Some media organisations now offer paid internships, apprenticeships and outreach programmes aimed at widening access to the profession.
