Gtx 1660 Vs Rx 580: Which is the Best Graphics Card?

Read Time:4 Minute, 12 Second

GTX 1660 graphics is made by Nvidia and RX 580 is made by Radeon. There are many companies who made these models. But Nvidia and Radeon are the best. Today, we compare these two graphics card which is best for playing PS4 games in PC. Let’s see the battle: gtx 1660 vs rx 580.

GTX 1660

NVIDIA finally announces the new GeForce GTX 1660, one month after launching its GTX 1660 Ti. We are facing a mid-range graphic with a very aggressive price and that comes to try to replace the popular GTX 1060 and 1050 Ti, which are currently from the graphics with a more interesting price for those who want to play in 1080p resolution and do not need everything the potential of the highest ranges.

GTX 1660

The new Nvidia GTX 1660 repeats the Turing architecture of 12 nanometers that we saw in the Ti model. In this case, we bet on 6GB of GDDR5 memory. These are all the technical characteristics of the new Nvidia graphic, a model that comes from 229.99 dollars and establishes a fairly affordable starting point for a new batch graph and the new Turing architecture.

A theoretical improvement of 35% compared to the GTX 1060

We are facing a mid-range graphic where some concessions have had to be made to offer a competitive price. The Turing architecture used is repeated, with a TU116 graphics core and manufactured in 12nm by TSMC. In total, we have 1,408 CUDA cores, 48 rendering units and 88 for textures.

The graph is capable of moving 5,207 GFLOPS with its 6GB GDDR5 and has a base speed of about 1,500 MHz, more or less depending on the assembler, and even peaks of about 1,800 MHz. Unlike the Ti model that opted for GDDR6, The GTX 1660 maintains the GDDR5 memory.

For connections, we have DisplayPort 1.4, HDMI 2.0b and some models also have an 8-pin connector for the power supply or DVI ports.

The theoretical energy consumption is 120W, although in tests such as those of Tech Power Up a TDP of about 109 W has been obtained during the game sessions. With an IDLE of 8W when at rest and sustained peaks of 141W.

According to the technical data, the new graphic improves efficiency by 15% compared to the previous generation and is also optimized for the ‘Open Broadcaster Software’, better known as OBS and used for streaming video streaming with platforms such as YouTube Gaming or Twitch.

The GTX 1660 represents an improvement of 35% compared to the GTX 1060 from 3GB at 1080p and 130% compared to the GTX 960, according to the theoretical data offered by NVIDIA. But according to the first tests, this Nvidia 1660 only improves by 12% compared to the GTX 1060 6GB. Compared to the RX590, a similar performance is obtained but the AMD graph consumes about 50W extra.

RX 580

The new Radeon RX 580 graphics cards assume the main features of Polaris, based on 14nm third-generation FinFET and where the efficiency even at high working frequencies is maximum. All new RX500 graphics are optimized to get the most out of DirectX 12 and Vulkan, offer HEVC H.265 encoding/decoding of 4K video and include Freesync technology.

But what Polaris provides to those who opt for the new Radeon is not limited to construction issues. The technologies that AMD includes in the new RXs enhance precisely several of the market niches they want to attract. One of the most prominent is that of 4K game streaming and for this, they have the Radeon ReLive application, optimized for their GPUs and that allows 4K video streaming at 60 fps (HEVC and H.264) directly to sites like Twitch.

The second technology that should be remembered is Radeon Chill, focused on energy savings through dynamic regulation of fps according to the movements within the game. With this software activated the player can save energy and reduce the operating temperature. It has been designed primarily for portable gaming, where the battery is a factor that plays against the gaming experience.

Play game at 1440p and 60 fps for less money

The reference model of the new RX500 range is the Radeon RX 580 graphics card. We are talking about a virtual reality ready model (VR Ready), with 36 compute units, 2304 Stream processors, 1257 MHz base frequency and 1340 MHz Boost, and 8 GB of GDDR5 memory with 256-bit interface. The equivalent power would be 6.17 TFLOPS and the bandwidth is set at 256 GB / s.

At the level of connections and consumption, the Radeon RX580 offers DisplayPort 1.3 and 1.4, with HDR support. As TDP we talk about 185 W, although ADM promises a 30% lower consumption when using its Chill technology.

I would like to suggest RX 580 graphics card that ensures quality at a low price. If you have a good budget, you can go for gtx 1660.
