Why the Most Important Architectural Question of the Next Decade Is What to Do With Existing Buildings

The most important architectural question of the next decade is not what to build but what to do with existing buildings. Many cities are growing rapidly, but much of their existing architecture was built in the past century. These structures are often inefficient and unattractive, making them difficult to repurpose for modern needs. However, many of these buildings also contain elements that are architecturally important and valuable. Rather than demolishing these structures, architects should focus on how to renovate these buildings to make them more efficient and attractive.

The field of architecture has traditionally focused on creating new buildings. When an architect is commissioned to design a building, the architect creates the designs for that building. Such buildings are the subject of architectural courses in schools and architectural publications. The existing buildings in urban areas are generally considered to be the responsibility of others, such as the developers of those buildings. These numbers don’t require any embellishment to make the case. The built environment accounts for an important proportion of the world’s carbon emissions, and an important portion of those emissions are from embodied carbon in existing structures. Each demolition of a building releases its embodied carbon into the atmosphere, which is then required to be replaced by a new building with its own embodied carbon. The most carbon-efficient building will almost always be the one that is already standing.

These types of challenges are representative of the architectural challenges that will emerge in the next decade. The task of taking existing buildings that were constructed for a specific purpose during a particular era and adapting them to meet the demands of a new era and a new city is a major challenge for architects.
