How to Stay Safe During Strong Winds and Storms

Strong winds can be scary, and although we are fortunate in the UK not to experience hurricanes, the autumn and winter can bring strong winds and storms with them that do a considerable amount of damage and pose a threat to life.

We have experienced lots of storms over the years in the UK that have caused a great deal of damage, and autumn and winter is the time of year when they are most likely to occur.

Being safe during a storm is important, and being aware of what to do can help to keep you and your family safe and well.

First of all, you should be aware of weather warnings – the met office will issue weather warnings for areas which are colour coded yellow amber and red with red of course being the highest risk. Make sure that you look at when the warnings are in effect and what it means to you.

Tune in to the radio and the television as well as this will also give you updates on weather warnings that may affect your area.

If you need to drive and you cannot stay at home, make sure that you drive safely for the conditions and slow down as there is a risk of flying debris and low visibility, as well as dangerous side winds, especially in more exposed areas.

Having a supply of essentials in the car with you is a good idea – a bag containing things like a portable phone charger, drinking water and blankets in case you get stuck anywhere and need to wait for help is a good thing to have with you at all times.

It is best to stay indoors during high winds and stormy weather, so stay at home if possible and do not travel unless it is absolutely necessary. If you have any problems during the storm and damage is caused, such as your garden fence being blown down for example, do not try to make repairs until the storm is over. Once it is, you can then get a professional like this fencing Gloucester based company greenfieldsltd.co.uk/services/fencing to come and do it safely for you.
