In the UK, responsibility for storm drains depends on where the drain is located and what it serves. Understanding this helps homeowners know when they must act and when their local water authority or council is responsible.
What about private drains?
If the storm drain is located within the boundary of your property and only collects rainwater from your roof, driveway, or garden, it is usually your responsibility as the homeowner to maintain it. This includes keeping it clear of leaves, soil, and debris.
Shared or public drains
If the drain carries rainwater away from more than one property, or lies outside your boundary, it may be classed as a shared drain or sewer.
