Cleaning laminate flooring can keep it looking as good as the day it was installed. There are also things you should know to prevent any problems, however, and to keep your flooring looking as beautiful as it should.
Beware of Water
Your 12mm laminate flooring from a flooring specialist like Irwin Tiles will only need mopping about once every couple of months and when you do it, don’t use too much water. You should also clean stains immediately and avoid any pooling. Not doing this can lead to staining and discolouration even on water-resistant flooring.
Avoid Abrasive Tools
Most modern laminate flooring is scratch resistant but that doesn’t make it safe to use abrasive tools such as steel wool. Stick to soft-bristle brushes and dust mops and avoid vacuum cleaners with a rotating brush or beater bar, which can scratch the surface.
Check Products
Some cleaning products are simply unsuitable for use on laminate flooring, so make sure to check the label.
Oil-based cleaners, for example, can damage the protective sealant on your floors and can leave residue and streaks. Also, avoid using wax or polish on 12mm laminate flooring or similar surfaces.
Even laminate cleaners should be used sparingly and these should always be applied onto the mop or cloth first, never directly onto the floor.
Make Your Own
You can make your own cleaner for laminate flooring but, again, care is needed. A simple option is to use a gallon of hot water with a teaspoon of unscented, clear washing-up liquid. A weak solution of water and white vinegar can also be used for cleaning, with no sticky residue left behind. Try out a solution of 10 parts water to 1 part vinegar.
If you find your floor has a waxy buildup or slight film after using the wrong cleaning products, you could combine a cup of white vinegar with a gallon of hot water. The vinegar can break down any film without damaging the surface.
