What Light Does to Sleep And Why It Should Be Every Bedroom Renovation Decision

Most people start their bedroom renovation decisions with things they can picture quickly. The headboard, the colour scheme, and whether the wardrobe goes on the left or right wall are all things that can be thought about easily.

Light is often an afterthought.

Of course, people might ask where the lamp goes near the end of the process, but only after they have decided on things that seem more important.

Light is actually a decision that should come first.

This is because light is the one variable that affects people’s sleep more than anything else. We know this from scientific study.

As well as regulating daily body temperature, sleep and alertness, our internal clocks also govern most other hormonal processes. And our internal clocks are regulated largely by light.

Specifically, blue light from morning sunlight signals wakefulness to the body, which is why bright light is bad for sleep. Conversely, darkness tells the body that it is time to sleep because it makes it possible for the hormone melatonin to rise to a level sufficient for sleep to be made possible. This is why getting light wrong is an important issue.

In terms of renovation decisions, this has implications that most people never realise. For Bedroom Renovations, consider https://www.thekitchenrefurbishmentcompany.co.uk/bedroom-renovations/

If you are sensitive to light, for example, the difference between good and bad curtains is enormous. Standard curtains, no matter how nice they are, tend to be very leaky, allowing plenty of light in around the edges and through the fabric itself. This is why blackout lining is so important for sleep.

And because of this, the decision about what curtains to buy should be made early on in the process, it will affect the choice of curtain pole and the depth of the recess and could even influence the style of window dressing you choose.

It’s the same with artificial lighting.

People tend to focus on the headboard, but the right artificial lighting design can make a huge difference to people’s sleep.

Specifically, it should be designed to work in harmony with the natural day and night cycle. For example, the overhead light should be bright enough to work in the morning but dimmed for the evening.

Every time you go to sleep, light could be making you wake up. This is why light should be a priority when making decisions about your bedroom renovation.

It’s not just a nice-to-have; it’s needed.
