Google Chrome black screen problem

Some people who use Google Chrome on Windows 10, Windows 8. And Windows 7 devices sometimes see a black screen – this is a known bug and quite simple to fix.

The steps provided in this article to resolve the Google Chrome black screen issue are applicable to Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10 devices.

Causes of the Chrome black screen problem

The Google Chrome black screen problem is one of those common technical bugs that can appear for a variety of reasons. Most often, it is about incompatibility or experimental functionality. One of the most common reasons is extensions not syncing with the latest version of Google. However, there may be more complicated causes at play.

How to fix Chrome black screen problem

There are a number of potential solutions to Chrome’s black screen problem. And most of them are quite simple. If you encounter this bug, please try to follow the suggestions below:

  1. Disable Google Chrome extensions. Not all extensions are the same, and sometimes developers are slow to update or even abandon them completely. When you run into a problem with Chrome, always try disabling extensions first – sometimes you may need to force quit the application for the changes to take effect.
  2. Disable Chrome flags. By their very nature, Google Chrome flags are experimental features, which means they could stop working at any time. Disable the enabled flags to see if the problem goes away.
  3. Resize the browser window. You can resize the browser window by pressing the Reset Down key  next to the  X in the upper right corner of the browser window, then press and hold the edges of the window to resize it as you like.
  4. This is only a temporary solution and the problem may reoccur.
  5. Run Chrome in compatibility mode. You can run Google Chrome in compatibility mode but, first, you’ll need to create a shortcut if you don’t already have an existing one for Google Chrome. This will allow you to run Chrome as if it were an application for an older version of Windows. Most users select Windows 7 if they are using a newer version of the Windows operating system. However, if you are already using Windows 7, try running it on an even older version.
  6. Disable hardware acceleration. When hardware acceleration is on, the most intense activities within the browser are handled by the GPU which frees up CPU usage so other programs can run better. However, this causes a browser overload. Therefore, if you see a black screen, you can try to proceed with disabling the hardware acceleration setting in your Chrome browser.
  7. Reset Chrome to default settings. If you continue to experience the black screen problem, you can always reset your Chrome browser to its default settings to make sure it’s not a configuration issue. By performing a reset, all extensions, bookmarks and browsing history will be removed.
